What is this place [of mine]?

Our local high streets are changing so quickly at the moment, what with online shopping and a global pandemic! It's such an important time to be thinking about our town centres ‒ who are they for, what do we want to see happen there, and how can art and creativity bring them to life?

this place [of mine] is an exciting new project for Greater Manchester, bringing together people from across the region and beyond to imagine the future of our high streets and town centres through digital art, culture and creativity.

What’s happened so far?

Through this project, we want to empower young people and amplify their voices. So, we set up a Young Producer's programme and recruited ten incredible Young Producers from Leigh, Rochdale, Stalybridge, Beswick and Oldham.

Kicking off in November 2020, the Young Producers attended online creative workshops supported by the FutureEverything team, and five mentor artists (or ‘Citizen Futurists’). During the workshops the Young Producers have been exploring their high streets, discovering the things that make it special and highlighting the changes they would like to see. They've really steered the project so far, sharing their thoughts and ideas, and now creating artwork to share with a wider audience to inspire them about the future.

What’s next?

February brings the launch of the online hub, an interactive website that showcases the artwork created by these inspiring Young Producers. The hub is a 3D virtual place where young people can explore and interact with the artworks including film, music, 3D models and illustrations. Developed by web designers Studio Treble with the help of the Young Producers, the hub enables you to discover artworks and local stories as you answer questions about your high street and the changes you would like to make.

The hub will also feature new digital artworks created by the Citizen Futurists, which will invite you to play, create and explore! As this place [of mine] evolves over the next couple of months, the immersive world will also feature a new work by artist Tine Bech, who creates colourful interactive work that connects people to their place through playful art experiences. So keep coming back to see what unfolds!
