DEAFDEAFDEAF - Q&A

Having released their third single and an accompanying music video, STAT speaks to up-and-coming Leigh band, DEAFDEAFDEAF...

Who are DEAFDEAFDEAF?

DDD are a 5 Piece Post-Something Rock Band from various areas of Greater Manchester but claim Leigh as our home as of right now.

Where you from and how did you meet?

The band was formed in mid-2019 in Leigh, originally just a bunch of lads loosely connected but brought together through music.

The current line up is:
Nathan Hill
(vocals) from Westleigh,
Ellis Whittle
(bass) from Leigh,
Connor Alder
(drums) from Hindley,
Jack Findlay
(guitar) from Denton,
Harry George
(guitar) from Stockport.

What’s your approach to music as a band?
Who writes and how?

Writing is shared. One of us will usually have an initial idea for a guitar part, we then just throw ideas around it for other parts to the song. A lot of the process flows in a rehearsal room where we’ll just keep jamming it out, record what we have and reflect on it at home. We’ll then bring it back into rehearsal and just keep building on it til we’re happy. We are constantly revisiting old songs if we have new ideas for them to see if we can revamp them in any way.

Punk, political, melancholic are ways your music *could* be described. Is this fair? How would you describe what it is you’re doing?

I don’t really know what we are, wouldn’t really like to put a label on ourselves. I don’t think we fall into the punk category really, we have used that label before earlier in our timeline as a band cause we were trying to live up to that label but we’ve come to realise now we aren’t really that. Melancholic I’d agree with, I’d say more honest than anything. The melancholy comes with the honesty as our music’s a representation of our experiences. To sum up our sound in a sentence I’d say an honest, gritty commentary. Can’t really put us under a single label I don't think.

Fav moments as a band so far? (enjoyed the Bootleg gig, even if it was over the airways!)

Probably in agreement there about Bootleg, with the current lineup we’ve only really been together since around January/February so that was our first gig together.

Besides that probably out Bread Shed Headline gig back in February 2020 was a great time, we’ve changed massively since then though.

We've spoken before about Leigh's culture scene. what is it you reckon Leigh needs more of?

More art! More alternative bars / hangouts, More Bands!

Near every bar & pub in Leigh is the same at the moment, there’s no real room for live music of any kind so a live music venue would be first on the list, just more art & more creativity would be the simple short answer to that one, STAT is definitely a great first step if we’re honest.

Besides music, what you all been up to over the past year?

Lots of self reflection I guess, as I say we’ve changed massively musically & with our lineups so it’s given us a new lease of life on that aspect,

Non musically related though, probably too much drinking & a lot of running/walking, anything to get out the house a little while.

Any shoutouts?

Shoutout to ‘The Snug’ in Atherton, lovely owners who continue to champion new music & alternative culture, as we discussed before we need more of that so yeah they’re the model cafe/pub/bar for that right now.

What’s next? (...album when?)

Well we aren’t slowing down at the moment to be honest, we’ve just filmed a video in Glasgow then next week we’re in the studio again, so possibly a single or something more? Who knows, we’ll keep you updated on our socials which you should follow!
